A short history of modern architecture in Graz
The success story of modern architecture in Graz has many fathers (and a few mothers). It all started around 1965 with a rebellion in the drawing rooms of the Faculty of Architecture. Two decades later, the Graz School was in full cry, much to the surprise of the contemporary international architecture scene - politically supported, innovative an very keen on experimenting. Friedrich Achleitner, doyen of Austrian architecture theorists, writes: "Whichever works or architects are subsumed under this category, the phenomenon is so characteristic and independent that it has won an unrivalled place in the history of architecture of the second half of the 20th century":
As the Cultural Capital of Europe 2003, Graz cemented its reputation with a number of new buildings: the Stadthalle (civic hall), the Chrildren´s Museum, the Helmut-List-Hall, the Kunsthaus (Museum of Contemporary Art) and the Island in the Mur were and sill are much admired highlights. Although not designed by local architects and artists, the latter tie in with the Graz School of Architecture.
The "fathers" are said not to habe cared at all about current developments in their zest for reinventing the wheel. The younger generation of local architects, however, seek international comparison. Their work is decidedly more low-key, straightforward and cool.
In any case, their achievements do bear comparison. The apectrum reaches from industrial buildings and schools to residential housing, shops and restaurants. And in the Styrian hospital building sector, the most comprehensive building project since the first construction of regional hospitals is well underway and will provide for a healthy future by means of top architecture.
The story of architecture in Graz continues to be written in the 21st century. After all, the Graz architects are well aware of their responsibility in adding buildings to a city, which was nominated a World Cultural Heritage specifically on the grounds of having succeeded in harmonising new and old in such a fruitful way.
